The Song Remains The Same

(1976)

Perhaps the definitive concert film on Led Zeppelin, The Song Remains The Same is a must watch for fans of the English rock behemoths.

Interspersing footage of the band’s epic three night stand at Madison Square Garden in July 1973 with┬ábehind-the-scenes clips of the band living life on the road, the documentary also features some quite bizarre fantasy sequences involving mob hitmen, Tarot characters, and a quest for the Holy Grail.

While all those bizarre fantasy sequences are questionable (and were widely panned by critics at the time), this was Led Zeppelin nearing the peak of their considerable powers, and Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham were on fine form.

Songs like ‘Dazed And Confused’ are stretched out to unbelievable excess, and Bonham in particular shows why he is one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. And as guitarist Page later noted, it was a reasonably honest statement of where we were at that particular time.
