The “Figure 8″ wall, Silver Lake, California
(Elliott Smith Figure 8, 2000)
A brightly coloured mural on the wall of a modest record company store, the “Figure 8” wall in the Silver Lake neighbourhood of Los Angeles rose to prominence when it featured on the cover of Elliott Smith’s Figure 8 album, released in April 2000.
Sadly, just over three years later from the release of the wonderfully Beatlesque Figure 8 it would become the most prominent site of tribute to the late Smith, following his tragic death in October 2003.
Thousands of Smith fans have visited in the years since the singer’s death, leaving floral and written tributes, inscribing his lyrics on the wall, and recreating the Nebraska born troubadour’s nonchalant pose on the album cover.
The wall has been the victim of ugly graffiti as well as earnest written tributes, and has duly been repainted several times in attempt to restore it to its former glory.
