11. ‘Diamonds On My Windshield’ by Tom WaitsThe Heart Of Saturday Night

‘Diamonds On My Windshield’¬†was one of Waits’ earliest forays into Jack Kerouac inspired, stream-of-consciousness beat-poetry. Waits’ croons beatnik-style over a minimalist jazz backing track about all that he sees out the window while cruising the American freeways into the late hours. Memorably, he recalls a Wisconsin hiker with a cue-ball head who is longing for his bed, and 15 feet of snow in the East that is “colder than a well-diggers’ ass.” ‘Diamonds On My Windshield’ is as good a track as any to play on a late night drive.
