Another great song to play on a late night drive, Elvis’ classic version of 1934 heartbreak anthem ‘Blue Moon’ is one for the romantics. Written and composed during the Great Depression years by Lorenz Hart and Richard Rodgers, the song features heavily on the soundtrack of Jim Jarmusch’s “searching for the spirit of Elvis” yarn Mystery Train. The song finds the King crooning in a particularly melancholic and downbeat style at first, over slow, rumbling bass and percussion, before hitting a few high notes of broken hearted sadness just before the fade out. As well as being a great road trip anthem, it has been adopted as an anthem of sorts for sports fans too, with supporters of England’s Premier League football club Manchester City FC (who play in a sky blue kit) regularly singing it at matches.
